Duperon Corporation executives travel to meet with world leaders on issues of water
By Bethany Bauer, Duperon Corporation
Saginaw, MI, April 11, 2008: Rapidly rising world population, paired with an aging infrastructure increasingly unable to support the growth. Climate changes impacting the replenishment of aquifers, depleting the world’s supply of good quality water. Increased energy costs. Higher rates of water contamination and pollution. These are the very real issues facing the world’s water supply. In addition, social factors create a true sense of urgency: over 1 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe water, and 2.6 billion – half of the developing world’s population – do not have adequate sanitation. 1.4M children die each year due to the world’s lack of available fresh water.
In the next 10-20 years, these issues will gather into what has been referred to as a “Perfect Storm”. It has been claimed that water may well become liquid gold. Major players within the industry such as GE and Dow along with countries such as China, Singapore and Australia are committing considerable resources to provide the leading technological solutions.
Terry Duperon, CEO, and Tammy Bernier, COO of Duperon Corporation are heading to Washington, D.C April 14-18, 2008 to meet with global and industry leaders to discuss these growing concerns. The Water and Wastewater Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (WWEMA) will hold their 35th Annual Washington Forum in combination with a celebration of the Association’s 100th anniversary.
WWEMA is a non-profit trade organization founded in 1908 to represent the interests of companies that manufacture products sold to the potable water and wastewater treatment industries. Its mission is to inform, educate and provide leadership on issues which affect the worldwide water and wastewater equipment industry. This year’s program, entitled “The Business of Water – Reflections and Projections,” promises to provide WWEMA members with a global perspective on the environmental issues and sustainability concerns the world is facing – and will continue to face in the future.
The two-day conference will focus on key industry trends that influence the search for solutions, as well as the impact U.S. and global economic forces will have on the industry in the coming years. Speakers include Christopher Flavin, president of Worldwatch Institute; Congressman Earl Blumenauer, U.S. House of Representatives; Senator Jeff Bingaman, U.S. Senate; Sudesh Menon, C.E.O. of WaterHealth India; and many more, including several representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Members of WWEMA who gather to listen to these speakers encompass the world’s leaders in water and wastewater equipment and process technology, upon whom we shall depend to solve the approaching problems and issues.
Duperon Corporation joins WWEMA members who supply the most sophisticated leading products and technology, on the front lines everyday providing solutions to water-related environmental problems and needs. The Saginaw-based manufacturer of mechanically-cleaned barscreens features product lines to manage the effective treatment of wastewater and stormwater.
“As a fairly new member, it inspires me to be in this community of committed individuals and companies,” relayed Bernier. “I always seem to hear this underlying nobility of purpose when you hear companies talk about what they contribute to get the job done. It reminds me that there is a bigger game afoot and that we fulfill an important role in water working on the planet.”
The growing demand for a solution and Duperon Corporation’s commitment to provide it has contributed to the company’s recent growth, contrasting with the trend of downsizing as the manufacturing industry has struggled. This continuous growth has been forwarded to other manufacturing facilities in the area; support for manufacture of components is managed by other local firms. This partnership has served to spread Duperon Corporation’s growth through a community that has been especially hard-hit by the downturn of the automobile sector of the manufacturing industry.
“Terry and I both believe that all people want to do is make a difference. It is a great opportunity to be able to make a difference in the area of water,” Bernier concluded.
Duperon Corporation is an engineering/manufacturing firm providing treatment solutions for municipal and industrial applications. The company has been located in Saginaw, Michigan since its first products came to market in 1979. Duperon Corporation products include such innovations as the Self-Cleaning Trashrack, the FlexRake®, compactors, conveyance systems, and other municipal and industrial water treatment solutions equipment. Application areas include stormwater, wastewater, pump stations, industrial intakes, and fish screening.

Saginaw Company to Receive Export Achievement Certificate |

Duperon Corporation to receive award at International Business Forum Luncheon in Detroit
By Bethany Bauer, Duperon Corporation
Saginaw, MI, February 8, 2008: Duperon Corporation will be honored on Friday, February 8, 2008, with the receipt of an Export Achievement Certificate at a presentation of the International Business Forum and U.S. Commercial Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce in Dearborn, MI.
The Export Achievement Certificate was created to recognize those small and medium-sized businesses that have successfully entered the international marketplace for the first time or broken into a new market. In September 2005, Duperon Corporation was contacted by Genesis Energy, a hydroelectric firm located in New Zealand. The company sought Duperon’s assistance with an infestation of a non-native plant, the hornwort, that was clogging water flow at the plant’s intakes. The overgrowth of the plant created major issues for the company’s hydroelectric power output, resulting in loss of generation and fines. Genesis Energy’s lead engineer traveled to the United States to further research Duperon’s solutions and equipment, and in 2006 ten of Duperon’s Self-Cleaning Trashracks were installed, insuring the ability to generate energy at the plant when demanded.
U.S. Commercial Services worked with Duperon throughout the process of opening this new market: arranging appointments with local banks, associations and consultants for the initial research trip; and providing information on the local economy, including the further potential of hydroelectric and wastewater markets. “The U.S. Commercial Services were instrumental in giving Duperon the knowledge, the connections, the resources and the confidence to complete our first export opportunity in New Zealand,” said Sarah Bernier, Duperon Corporation Sales & Marketing Manager.
Duperon Corporation was nominated for the honor by Sara Coulter Canty, Director of the Detroit U.S. Export Assistance Center. Coulter Canty worked closely with Duperon Corporation in this market-opening venture, from the initial discussion of potential business to the execution of contract agreements. Accepting for Duperon Corporation is Duperon’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Sarah Bernier.

Duperon® lights up the world
|
|
Jean Spenner, The Saginaw News
A Saginaw County company is helping to keep the lights on halfway around the globe.
Duperon Corporation, with offices at 515 N. Washington in Saginaw, and an assembly plant at 3973 E. Washington in Buena Vista Township, last year began doing business in New Zealand - its first venture outside North America.
In addition, the Cassopolis-based Edward Lowe Foundation last year cited Duperon as one of 50 Michigan companies to watch.
Duperon provides water filtration and control equipment for municipal and industrial use, as well as compactors and conveyance systems.
It previously did work in the United States and Canada before becoming one of more than 10,000 Michigan companies that export goods.
Michigan’s export shipments in 2006 totaled $40.4 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates. Michigan exported to 195 destinations in 2006, with neighbor Canada the state’s largest foreign market. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. lists 47 Michigan companies exporting to New Zealand.
Crews with the 22-year-old Duperon and with their Te Awamutu, New Zealand partner - fabrication and assembly shop Stewart & Cavalier - installed equipment to prevent weeds from clogging the works at two hydroelectric power stations, in Tokaanu and Piripaua, said Sarah Bernier, international sales & marketing manager.
The weeds, non-indigenous plants that somehow entered New Zealand rivers, were threatening the power to residents in Auckland, the country’s largest city, she said.
“(New Zealand) had developed a weed condition that stalled their technology,” Bernier said.
Hydroelectric plants power about 60 percent of New Zealand, which has 70 major rivers.
An engineer for Genesis Energy researching online found Duperon’s equipment and traveled to Saginaw County to learn more.
Customer service work continues with the company, Bernier said.
“A lot of New Zealand power is faced with the same weed condition,” she said. “They are benchmarking our success at these two power plants.”
Success there may lead to more business in the country and in Australia.
“We just bid a job in Newcastle (Australia),” Bernier said.
Duperon staff members trained installers in New Zealand. The company plans to soon set up an independent sales group to serve New Zealand and Australia.
“The challenges are the time difference and providing the level of support we like,” Bernier said. “They’re ahead of us 18 hour. It’s being there when they have a question.”

Saginaw manufacturer minimizes Impact of future hurricanes
|
|
By Kellie Garrett
Natural disasters bring people together, working to make a difference in the lives of those devastated by the occurrence. One Michigan Manufacturers Association member in Saginaw is a part of the process that helps minimize the devastation before it even occurs. Duperon Corporation is an engineering/ manufacturing firm providing waterflow treatment solutions for municipal and industrial applications.
The company’s products proved vital to keeping one Louisiana parish (municipality) above water in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The success of Duperon’s products during some of the worst natural disasters to hit the U.S. has brought the company widespread recognition and opportunities for growth.
Duperon had 18 of its patented FlexRake® barscreens installed in the hurricane stricken region. The mechanically-cleaned barscreens functioned flawlessly during the catastrophes, shielding pumps — vital to keeping parishes above water during storms — from debris that could have clogged or damaged them.
There was so much water flowing through the area that “pumps were running all day, 24 hours, for a month,” said Paul Klingman, spokesperson for Associated Pump Systems — Duperon’s representative company in Houma, Louisiana.
“These are pumps that only switch on during a storm event so this was a lot of run time. They were always clear. It (the FlexRake) truly performed up to and beyond our expectations,” added Klingman.
As part of the relief effort, Associated Pump “mobilized huge pumps and worked tirelessly, day and night,” said Tammy Bernier, Duperon vice president. “They saw heartbreaking tragedy, but still stood for their community... and we would expect nothing less.
“Louis Klingman, Paul Klingman and their crew were an incredible force in the days immediately following the storm,” Bernier said. “The team assisted in dewatering New Orleans and was a source for many replacement pumps.”
In the face of disaster, opportunity was born. On behalf of Duperon, Associated Pump reached out to other storm-ravished areas offering assistance.
“Parishes were eager for help,” said Sarah Bernier, Duperon sales and marketing manager. “Our assistance and equipment was sought and sourced by two neighboring parishes: St. Charles and Terrebonne.
” Going forward, Duperon representatives are leveraging relationships with key decision makers in the south to incorporate other products into the region’s pumping systems.
The exceptional performance of the machines has not gone unnoticed. Large engineering firms across the U.S. are taking notice of the design and capabilities of the FlexRake and it has been incorporated into flood protection plans in several areas. As a result, Duperon has had to reorganize its production schedule in order to accommodate building the additional units.
Recognition has also come in the form of awards. Duperon was recognized in 2006 as one of the Edward Lowe Foundation’s “Michigan 50 Companies to Watch” and has been noted as a company to watch in Louisiana as well. Other awards include Economic Excellence in Saginaw County, awarded by Saginaw Future, Inc. for 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Duperon, which was established in 1985 by Terry Duperon, currently operates in international markets offering products that manage wastewater, storm water, raw water intakes, beautification and barriers for fish, manatees and other aquatic life. Beyond the FlexRake, the company also designs and produces the Self-Cleaning Trashrack, which removes large, cumbersome items and smaller, matted debris ranging from large logs to leaves, aquatic vegetation and general refuse. In response to customer needs, Duperon has also developed complementary product lines such as controls, conveyors and compactors.
The company employs nearly 30 people and has been growing sales at a rate of 25 percent for the past five years.

Saginaw Company Minimizes Impact of Future Hurricanes

Duperon Corporation provides equipment to help communities stay above water
Saginaw, MI, March 1, 2007: In the days and weeks following the destruction caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, many Americans wished there was something they could do to help. Many did find ways to assist in the relief effort donating food, clothing, bottled water, even blood to help the residents of our storm-battered South.
Now, more than a year later, the horrific images have begun to fade as the South makes her slow recovery. Prior to the storms, Duperon Corporation of Saginaw, Michigan had 18 of its patented FlexRake Mechanically Cleaned Barscreens installed in the area all of which functioned flawlessly during the events that are indelibly marked upon our history. The equipment shields pumps vital to keeping parishes above water during storm events from debris that could clog or damage them. The Saginaw company is now providing more equipment to minimize the future impact of a disaster of this proportion, with 17 additional FlexRakes shipped in 2006. Louisianas lower parishes are now girding themselves using foresight that will be key to preventing future storms from becoming disasters.
Four such installations in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, were not directly hit by Hurricane Katrina, but were hugely impacted by Hurricane Rita, says Paul Klingman, representative of Associated Pump Systems in Houma, Louisiana. When we heard of the devastation in Katrinas wake, the first thing we did was worry about our representatives and many customers. We called positioned to do what was needed to provide support, said Tammy Bernier, Vice President of Duperon Corporation. There was no need for worry, however; Klingman only had good news. The screens performed flawlessly, allowing pump stations the full capacity necessary to remove floodwaters in the Parish. If the screens had not been operating, the pumps would have become clogged by debris.
Davis Pond, a site approximately fifty miles North of Hurricane Katrinas landfall, was impacted heavily by the storm. The Duperon Corporation FlexRake kept its pump stations functioning, handling ravaging storm waters. The equipment brought up so much debris, in fact, that a Bobcat was purchased to clear the massive piles accumulated on the deck.
There was so much water flowing through the site that pumps were running all day, twenty-four hours, for a month, said Klingman. These are pumps that only switch on during a storm event, so this was a lot of run time. They were always clear. It [the FlexRake] truly performed up to and beyond our expectations. As did Associated Pump. The Duperon Corporation representatives mobilized huge pumps and worked tirelessly, day and night. They saw heartbreaking tragedy, but still stood for their community. We are so proud of them, and knowing who they are we would expect nothing less, praised Bernier.
The exceptional performance of the machines has not gone unnoticed. Duperon Corporation, recognized in 2006 as one of the Edward Lowe Foundations Michigan 50 Companies to Watch, has been noted as a company to watch in Louisiana as well. 2007 promises to see additional machinery sent to the area. We are very proud of our products performance. In one case, the entire pump station was underwater, yet our unit still performed. We feel grateful that we were able to make a difference I think the whole country was aching to make that difference, Bernier concluded.
Duperon Corporation is an engineering/manufacturing firm providing treatment solutions for municipal and industrial applications. The company has been located in Saginaw, Michigan since its first products came to market in 1979. Duperon Corporation products include such innovations as the Self-Cleaning Trashrack, the FlexRake, compactors, conveyance systems, and other municipal and industrial water treatment solutions equipment. Application areas include wastewater, water treatment, storm water, pump stations, industrial intakes, and fish screening.

Duperon Corporation Honored As One Of ' Michigan 50 Companies To Watch'
|
| |
Saginaw, Michigan- Duperon Corporation has been recognized as one of the "Michigan 50 Companies to Watch," an awards program sponsored by the Edward Lowe Foundation. </
Duperon Corporation received the honor at awards ceremonies during the second annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business event, April 19 in East Lansing . While Duperon Corporation was the only company from Saginaw to be recognized with a 2006 award, the company was joined by four other companies from the Midland area. Tammy Bernier, Vice President of Duperon Corporation, spoke of the award as a win for the team. "It's great to be acknowledged as a 'company to watch' in the state of Michigan . This validates the team's hard work and dedication that we - and many small businesses - bring to each day."
Companies nominated to be members of the "Michigan 50 Companies to Watch" list must be second-stage companies, defined as employing 6 to 99 full-time-equivalent employees and generating $750,000 to $50 million in annual revenue or working capital in place from investors or grants. In addition, the companies must be privately held and headquartered in Michigan .
Duperon Corporation is a Saginaw , Michigan based manufacturer of mechanically cleaned barscreens. The company operates in both North American and international markets, including a number of Michigan wastewater treatment plants. This equipment is used to effectively manage wastewater, stormwater, raw water intakes, beautification and barriers for fish, manatees, and other aquatic life. In September of 2005, Duperon Corporation received the opportunity to see just what a difference their equipment could make when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita occurred on the coastline of Louisiana , devastating many communities. Duperon sites operating fifty miles northeast of the Katrina landfall functioned perfectly during the worst the storm could offer, pulling so much waste and debris from the water that a Bobcat had to be brought in to remove it all! The clearing of debris enabled pumps in areas near Duperon sites to continue running, essential to prevent flooding in the area. The performance so impressed local government agencies that Duperon Corporation will be supporting those communities in future prevention efforts.
The father-daughter ownership team of Terry Duperon and Tammy Bernier has created an environment in which employees are encouraged to become entrepreneurial thinkers and innovators, incorporating their own thoughts and ideas into daily processes. This dynamic environment proved essential in 2005 as Duperon Corporation evolved from a company of fourteen full-time employees to a staff of twenty-four (nearly doubling the number of the previous year), all while experiencing a 25% sales increase, continuing the company's trend of the past four years. Forecasts for 2006 promise much of the same growth, developments, and opportunities. Duperon Corporation will also be relocating its production operations to 3973 East Washington in June of 2006. The new production space will provide Duperon Corporation the room necessary to continue growing its rapidly expanding customer base.

Local Company on the Move
|
| |
Saginaw, Michigan- Duperon Corporation will be moving its multi-million dollar production operation to 3973 East Washington in June 2006. The new production space will provide Duperon Corporation the room necessary to continue growing its rapidly expanding national and international customer base. Duperon Corporation is currently growing at a rate of 25% per year. This growth has caused the company to outgrow its production space, forcing manufacturing operations to occasionally spill onto the driveway of the current facility. Vice President Tammy Bernier spoke of the new space as an opportunity for the team: "Our team is excited. This will give us the room we need to execute our plans to build a world headquarters here in mid-Michigan. Our team has displayed extraordinary ingenuity and character in generating and managing the pain that is inherent with a fast-growing company. I would put them up against anyone, anytime in what we can pull off." President Terry Duperon spoke of the move as a next step for the company, forwarding the vision he has for the company's future. "This move is a realization of our passion for entrepreneurship. I really think that in view of the current climate that it is only through entrepreneurial skills that we will find what's next for Michigan ." Duperon Corporation is an engineering/manufacturing firm providing treatment solutions for municipal and industrial applications. The company has been located in Saginaw , Michigan since its first products came to market in 1979. Duperon Corporation products include such innovations as the Self-Cleaning Trashrack, the FlexRake , compactors, conveyance systems, and other municipal and industrial water treatment solutions equipment. The growth of the company has also provided employees with opportunities for promotions, for example Megan Krieger's promotion to Production Project Manager. Duperon has also entered the international marketplace, placing its first international bid for work in Baghdad , Iraq . With this bid, Duperon positioned itself as a supplier to one of the world's largest international construction companies, contracted to the United States Department of Defense as part of the reconstruction effort presently going on in Iraq . According to Ursula Rozanski, Duperon's Director of Marketing, "The Saginaw Future team has been providing us with invaluable assistance in preparing the Iraq bid, and in working out the details of exporting our equipment, in particular Delena Spates-Allen, Procurement Manager." Duperon has a successful history on a national level, of having done work with the Army Corps of Engineers, state, federal, and local government agencies, municipalities as well as private industry. The company is also one of a handful that has been nationally approved by a consortium of government agencies to use its product as a manatee-safe barrier in the water systems of Florida . The consortium includes: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), and their charter (under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act) is to protect the West Indian Manatee. These are core values that we believe in at every level of the company. Our corporate standard, 'you'll like working with us' applies to our customers, employees, vendors and of course the community that we live and work in. We are set on a mission, the first focus of which is the customer. We've made that our strategic position-it's all about them [the customers] and about the unique experience of working with Duperon. We hire people that genuinely share our philosophy of customer care, integrity, and high standards. Our supply chain partnerships have the same strategic and philosophical requirements. This integrated customer care philosophy makes it easy for us to be who we strive to be, and who we are. We are there for our customers, for our vendors, for each other and for our community." Duperon believes strongly that the small and medium business entrepreneur "will be driving the economy of the future by developing new products and creating new jobs that never existed before." He also believes that the secret to competitive success is to "live in the future. [and] plan for the life cycle and technological obsolescence of your present products, by studying the marketplace, and (as a result), designing and bringing new products to market while the present products are still competitively positioned." As head of research and development, and as President of a rapidly growing business concern, Duperon has not allowed his responsibilities to separate him from his customers. He still fields a high number of service calls himself, as well as making regularly scheduled follow-up calls to see how his customers are doing, years after the original sale of the equipment. Duperon believes that since he is building the equipment for his customers, they become a logical and valuable source of product improvement suggestions and new product ideas. Duperon is an engineering/manufacturing firm providing highly ingenious, and uniquely simple water treatment solutions for municipal and industrial applications. The company has been located in Saginaw County , Michigan , since its first products came to market in 1979. DUPERON CORPORATION'S MECHANICAL BARSCREEN PRODUCTS EASE ODOR CONTROL, LEAD INDUSTRY IN REDUCING COST-OF-OWNERSHIP
|
| |
Saginaw, Michigan- Duperon Corporation, established in 1985, designed and developed the FlexRakeT for customers who wanted an automatic, continuous-cleaning mechanical barscreen product that is flexible, simple, minimizes odors, requires no operators and little to no maintenance. This innovative device is named the FlexRake because of its unique ability to "flex" around large debris that can weigh over 1,000 pounds, removing it effortlessly. Additionally, the unique Duperon FlexLinkT technology has eliminated the need for massive frame installation and extensive onsite engineering.
Nationally, many municipalities and diverse industries have been able to quickly adapt the FlexRake to their existing environments or save money by retrofitting it to their existing barscreens. From a financial and operational viewpoint, the FlexRake has consistently provided one of the lowest cost-of-ownership models in the industry. Its low-profile design saved one customer almost two million dollars on the construction of the building that will house the devices. Application areas include wastewater, water treatment, storm water, pump stations, industrial intakes, hydroelectric, pulp/paper mills, correctional institutions, food and beverage processing, and fish screening.
Other Duperon product lines include accessories for the FlexRake, the Self-Cleaning Trashrack (first installed in 1979), controls for Duperon mechanical bar screen products, and drag chain conveyance systems.
