Pump impellers can be permanently damaged or disabled by debris. Screens are used in advance of pumps to provide a barrier to debris however, without a proper cleaning system the screen can become covered with debris. This can cause cavitation to occur within the pumping chamber. Pumps are too expensive and often too critical to public safety to risk unprotected operation.
Turbine technology is particularly vulnerable to debris and this can be magnified by a storm event. Because of the cost of turbines and the exposure of key components to the flow, turbine installations are equipped with rugged screen systems and most are self-cleaning. The difference in screen cleaning systems is in their ability to provide maximum flow for generation at all times.
